Ancora una volta... *** One more time...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAgESrVK-go

... one month is gone and I haven't written.... That's quite normal then! =) I really don't know where to start.... once again there would be many things to say.... too many .... And even this time I'll write a lot... And this is normal too! =p
Well, trying to start from the beginning and hoping not to be too boring: on Saturday April 4th, the same day of General Conference, arrived at the house of my parents a boy from Mexico, Jesus, who came to Italy mainly to a course at the "Antoniano" of Bologna, but also to meet some people, like my family with whom he had been in touch by phone for a few months, since he called to know how to come to Italy, etc.. He learned Italian by himself and he teaches Mexican children to sing in Italian, that's why he likes so much "Lo Zecchino D'Oro!" Jesus has the age of Xavier and in the time he stayed at my parents ' home we had the chance to get to know him better: he is very nice and talented! He had to stay home with my parents until Wednesday April 8th, then go to a family in Rome, but because of the situation after the earthquake, this family had given their availability to accommodate people from Abruzzo, so they could not accommodate even Jesus, who stayed here also for Easter, until he left for Bologna to do the course that was waiting with impatience.

In San Marino with Jesus!

Monday, April 6th, we took him to visit Forlì (not that there is much to see) and we made him taste the Italian ice cream and then the Kebab sandwich (which is not Italian, but it's soooo good!). While we were finishing eating the ice cream we met the missionaries who then came with us until the Kebab place and then they said that they wanted ice cream, not Kebab! It was funny! In the evening, I went to give the gift to Gloria for her birthday! She was very happy! Mamma mia, she's already 12 years old!

The next day, Tuesday April 7th, in the afternoon, I took Jesus to visit the Moss family. The children he teaches singing in Mexico wrote letters to Eli, Adam and Gabriel, so he wanted to know them! Elodie was very excited to be out in the open air and play with her friend Gabriel! The weather was beautiful! And I enjoyed talking a little with Rebekah! She is cool!!!!!! Saturday morning in his lunch break, Xavier, helped by Elodie prepared snacks for the Sunday, that is Easter. Elodie likes to help dad cooking! In the afternoon, I had promised my dad that I would go to help him cooking. It was making lasagna! So I went, Elodie is always very happy to see her grandmother! I also talked a little with Jesus especially of music! Then I "stretched the muscles" in preparing the pasta for lasagna... My dad is really good! This year, for me, Easter came so fast that I hardly even noticed! In fact I think I have not made greetings to almost anyone ... Sorry! On Easter morning we went to church like all other Sundays. I went in the Young Women class because it was the first Sunday for Gloria! At the end for various reasons the lesson was only 10 minutes long! At the sunday school class, the class was almost full! Wow, that doesn't happen sometimes, but NEVER! It was a nice morning, an opportunity to remember more of the great love that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for us and of what Jesus had to suffer to give us the chance to be saved and to return to live again with them. I am very grateful for this and I know that now He is risen, and lives and continues to guide His church here on earth through a living prophet: Thomas S. Monson.
Like every Easter, we had lunch at my grandfather's house; there were the missionaries, Lella, Amalia, Maurice and Gloria, an english sister who was there that Sunday, Jesus, the three of us, my parents and Ariele and of course my grandfather! Just a few people =p! Useless to say it, lunch was delicious! Xavier made two apple pies even more good than the ones he did for general conference the week before! Amalia brought a huge Easter egg, instead Elodie was all happy to open hers received as a present from a Xavier's work colleague. Elodie was more interested in the chocolate than the surprise (which, by the way, was one of the Winx ...)! =) We stayed at my grandfather's home until the evening to clean and wash everything and even Easter is already gone....
On Monday, we planned to go to San Marino with Jesus. Arielino had to come with us, but finally he went to Venice with that english sister to help her change the plane ticket... I will not make any comment on it because they have already been made so many that day... But from that moment we often tease Ariele...!!! Elodie stayed with her grandparents! It was a beautiful day. Jesus was excited about everything we saw! He bought several things, taking advantage of low prices. We ate in a restaurant, reeeeally good and inexpensive. Then we walked a lot to loose some of the wieght we gained! Jesus has a "friend" who is called Punno. Every week Punno give a small lesson for all the music students of Jesus. Punno was also in San Marino and to show that he's known even there, he met someone who recognized him.... Well it's better for you to watch for yourself because maybe you don't understand what I am talking about...!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAgESrVK-go

We brought something to Elodie, a toy dog so soft!
On tuesday afternoon I went to Forli to exchange some music we Jesus he had a lot of stuff, and finally I even took him to buy another suitcase because the ones he had were no longer enough! In the evening we greeted him because the next day he left for Bologna to go to Antoniano. It has been nice to get to know him! Shortly after he went back home to Mexico, swine flu came out, and he had to stay home, there could not be classes and he couldn't even go to church .... luckily now the situation returned to normal, even if that influence is still around.
On thursday, April 16th, in the afternoon, Elena came to our house and together we went to Bennet (shopping mall where Xavier works). Then in the evening we watched a movie together. I like to spend time with my friend; Elodie knows her very well now, so when she comes, Elodie is always around her!
On saturday 18th, and Sunday April 19th we had the Rimini District Conference. The Saturday after the first session of the conference, with the young women and leaders we had the last rehersal of the hymn "Walk by faith" that we sang on Sunday morning. We were not all there for various reasons but we did quite well anyway! Needless to say that the conference was very beautiful, a great recharging for another week or even a month. On Sunday as well as my uncle there were also my aunt and my cousins, but they didn't stay long after the conference because they had stuff to do. Some of the things that touched me during this conference were:
to show our faith with our actions, serving in our church callings, so that it can grow. We should serve with our hearts, because every time we serve in a calling we are prepared to do something else, not something more important, but something else. We were also asked to pray unceasingly for the temple in Rome, so that everything can go well for its construction, and also pray for the Rome stake, which is also facing a great difficulty (helping families affected by the earthquake). In the early afternoon at the church in Rimini, we had (the leaders of the district) the district council. Finally we arrived home around 5 pm!! And we went to my parent's house. Elodie was so happy to be a little with grandma! During conference she was very good! She was quiet, and she allowed us to listen to a good part of the conference!

And finally, Saturday April 25th arrived. In Italy is a national holiday so Xavier was not working. The young men Presidency of the district has organized an activity for them and invited the young women as well. In the beginning I didn't really want to go, but since no one would have been with Gloria, I went, and Xavier and Elodie came with me as well. The activity consisted in visiting the dam Ridracoli, hiking for a few kilometers and then visit the museum of the water. We were a pretty big group, because there were members who were not supposed to come at the activity... We have never been to Ridracoli and it is just an hour away from Forlimpopoli! We had to meet all in Forlimpopoli and then go there together (by car). It's very beautiful up there and we were lucky to have a good weather, because the days before and the day after it rained! The hike was hard, especially because I don't exercise much: i should do that hike every day so I can loose these extra kilos!! =)

Elodie also liked the hike and the place a lot, it wasn't that hard for her: Xavier brought her with a sort of baby sling on his back! In certain moments I would have like to be in her place! We will go back there for sure this summer whith Xavier's family!
Around 5 pm we were already in Forlì! We took Gloria home and then we went to my parents home, just to say hi. We were completely dead ........ except for Elodie!

On Sunday April 26th I was again visiting the Young Women class. Xavier had to work only in the morning but then they made him work the whole day... He was very angry about this. So after church meetings instead of going home I went to my parents home, Elodie was obviously happy to be with her grandma! In the evening we went home pretty early, Xavier came out from work at 7 pm . Once we were all home we talked, using Skype, for the last time with Adam, because the first of May he left for his mission!

On monday, April 27th Elodie made another step to get closer to 2 years ... she turned 23 months old! In the morning I had a meeting with Sabrina because we have to plan everything for girls camp in July. It's the first time for the both of us doing it, there are many things to think of and consider in planning a girls camp... with Xavier, in the afternoon, we went to Forlì because we had several things to do, and things to pay and we also took the chance to go to the library where we have some discount to buy a couple of books! I bought a book that should help me to do some exercise... I started to read it, now I have to apply it...!! I have to win the laziness that keeps "persecuting" me since I was pregnant!

Now, there are 4 missionaries in Forlì! A new companioship arrived and one of them is "fresh fresh" from the US! Ihas been a long time since last time we had 4 missionaries! The new companionship came to our house on wednesday April 29th to get to know us a little and they gave us a reading schedule for the Book of Mormon. In the morning I made a lemon cake... It didn't look very well but for me it was good! Instead, the first day of May we had the other companionship for lunch. Finally there was the sun and it was also hot! Xavier has cooked stuffed vegetables... very good! We ate outside, in the garden of the house. It was the first time! So we used the table that we bought not long ago for the first time as well. We also bought a spray against mosquitoes (including and especially tiger-mosquitos, here there are many and are worst than the normal ones) so this summer we can enjoy more of our small garden!
On sunday, May 3rd I did the lesson in Young Women because Mila went to a stage of Karate.... So I had 2 lessons: YW and Sunday School! Luckily I didn't have to do a talk too! But being the first sunday of the month, I shared my testimony. =) My mom came to our home to help me, since we had to prepare everything to leave for the temple. So she played with Elodie who, needless to say, was soooooooooo happy!
Thanks mom for your help!!!!!!!!! On monday, May 4th we left around 5:45 am to go to the temple!!!!!!!! It has been a wonderful week: I bought my temple dress! To attend the temple sessions Xavier and I had to alternate each other so that one of us could stay with Elodie. Then on thursday we managed to do a session together: Elodie stayed with the Loberto family that we got to know during that week. They are very good and nice, they live really close to the Corvasce family and they have two children: Lorenzo of 5 years old (I think) and Natalia of 2 and a half years old! Elodie has a new friend! During the week we went to visit a french couple, temple missionaries, that Xavier knows and to whom his family left two boxes for us with clothes and several other things especially for Elodie. Inside one of the boxes there was a Teletubbies: Elodie didn't leave it for a second! (she loves the Teletubbies!) We also went to visit the president of the temple and his wife, who is pres. Castellani. We already knew him (his sister is a member of the Forlì branch) and it was nice to spend a little time with them. Until Wednesday night there were not many people in the hostel, but then it was full: almost the whole ward of Pavia came for the temple wedding of a young couple. There were lots of children! I met a sister who's name is Erika (with k!), she looks so much alike Paulina ... It's cool because she is from Ecuador and she was cheerful and full of energy like Paulina! Justthat she has three daughters and is married to an italian man who served the mission in Forlì (even if it was for a very short time)! She reminded me how much I miss Paulina... I miss and love you sooooo much Paulina!!!!!!!!!
We left from the Swiss temple last Friday and we got home in the night. Elodie does no longer sleep much in the car... good times are finished!! But she was good enough, we can't complain. It's kind of sad to leave the temple and go back to the "world", but we are back with a stronger recharge and we feel more rested! Although I got a strong cold and Elodie a little bit as well. We are back in the heat! In Switzerland, at the beginning of the week it was almost cold, but then the heat arrived there too, but not as much as here in Forlì! It's not nice to have a cold when it is hot!!!!!!! When we got home, we also had a nice surprise: we found a letter from Adam or elder Raveau! So on sunday we wrote him back and Elodie did draw something for him! =)

On Sunday May 10th, it was Mother's Day !!!!! And at the end of the church meetings each mother and future mother received a rose and a chocolate from the "men" of the branch! We also ate all together; afterwards as sisters we had the visiting teaching training.

On monday, May 11th we went back to everyday life but with a little more energy and enthusiasm. In the afternoon the missionaries showed up (the new companionship) just to visit with us a little. On tuesday, May 12th, in the evening, Elodie and I met with Elena at the biggest park in Forlì. We haven't seen each other for almost a month! We walked a little (Elodie likes walking a lot!) And then we ate a piadina (Elodie ate almost her whole piadina!) I love so much that park...

On thursday, May 14th, in the morning I went to the dentist... I had a little but deep caries and still now my tooth is hurting... = ( The dentist took off a caries but also took a lot of money! Perhaps I should be a dentist...!! =) In the afternoon my mother came to stay with Elodie because I had to go to the youth leadership training meeting made by the second counselor of the mission. While waiting for my mother to get here, my dad's cousin and aunt came here to visit us, aunt Paola brought some clothes for Elodie. I left to go to Rimini when my mom came; when I came back, I noticed that Secondo (my dad's cousin) cleaned the garden from all the weeds and aunt Paola swept the floor! Soo nice! About the training in Rimini, it was interesting, pres. Polelli (which is also my uncle!) did it. There are so many things we can do to improve, it's incredible! We never end to learn!

On friday May 15th, we had again the missionaries for lunch, but this time the new companionship. We cooked something "fresh", even if that day was not that hot...!! And then strawberries with whipped cream .... soooooooo good!
Even this Sunday, I had to do the lesson in Young Women as Mila was not there; we talked about temple marriage. Gloria was very impressed by this lesson ... and I realized even more how grateful I am for having the blessing to be married for time and eternity and for the sacred covenants I made with my husband and the Lord in the temple. I need to do my best to live worthy everyday!!!!!! And I am especially grateful to have a husband so special who has so much patience with me! =)
It 'amazing how many things can happen in such a short time, when a week ends, it seems that not much happened, but then when I find myself writing about what happened in a month ... wow, there really are so many things! Or am I that I want to tell and write too much?... Must be that as well! =)
Today, Xavier was released earlier from work to take the train to Milan to do a job interview (for this area I believe...... ) Let's hope that this is the good chance to change his job!!!!!!!!!!!!

I miei bisnonni materni, Gibson e Cecelia Sharp Condie, vivevano a Clackmannan, in Scozia.

«Caro Padre celeste, non so come posso andare avanti.

*See the names above of most of the people who died in the earthquake in Abruzzo (Italy)
Today there was the funeral of some of the victims of the earthquake in Abruzzo. I started to watch the ceremony on television, but then I switched it off because I was feeling so bad to see all the bare especially those of little children ... The earthquake in Abruzzo of April 6th made me think a lot about many things. On the evening before, on Sunday April 5th at 10:20 pm , we had an earthquake pretty strong here too without consequences, only a great fear, nothing compared to what happend a few hours later in L'Acquila. We were just returned home from General Conference; it is not by chance that during conference they talked a lot about trials, how to have faith in difficult times to move on and things like that. Our leaders are truly inspired! This week I wondered many times how I would have reacted if I were there in Abruzzo, if would have apply the teachings so often listened to or what I would have done. Throughout this week I was also so scared that something could happen here, because checking on the internet I saw that others earthquakes have been registered in this area as well... and this made me think even more of how material things can disappear in a few seconds and maybe I lose my time in things that at the end are not eternal. There are many thoughts in my mind now, but praying at the same time I can feel so much peace... I realized there are so many things that I need to improve or change the bad habits that I need to overcome... I began to think about all this, listening to general conference, but then these events have intensified my thoughts and my determination to change what is still wrong in my personal life! Now the difficult task is to keep these intentions alive over time, even when we won't hear anymore talking so much of the earthquake in Abruzzo... I think that writing them here will help me remember them! =)
Several of my friends around the world wrote me asking if we were good (because the heard about this earthquake)! Thanks again for your concerns about us!!!!!!!!! And thanks also to all who are praying for us! I love you all much!
I take the chance also to write some of the things said during this conference. It's always so wonderful and recharging to listen to the prophet and the other leaders who tell us about how overcome our trials and find true peace and joy! Here are some of the talks that impressed me the most:

Elder Robert D. Hales
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

When we live providently, we can provide for ourselves and our families and also follow the Savior’s example to serve and bless others.
When faced with the choice to buy, consume, or engage in worldly things and activities, we all need to learn to say to one another, “We can’t afford it, even though we want it!” or “We can afford it, but we don’t need it—and we really don’t even want it!”

President Henry B. Eyring
First Counselor in the First Presidency

My purpose today is to assure you that our Heavenly Father and the Savior live and that They love all humanity. The very opportunity for us to face adversity and affliction is part of the evidence of Their infinite love. God gave us the gift of living in mortality so that we could be prepared to receive the greatest of all the gifts of God, which is eternal life.

Elder M. Russell Ballard
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Learning the lessons of the past allows you to build personal testimony on a solid bedrock of obedience, faith, and the witness of the Spirit.
When you are willing to listen and learn, some of life’s most meaningful teachings come from those who have gone before you. They have walked where you are walking and have experienced many of the things you are experiencing. If you listen and respond to their counsel, they can help guide you toward choices that will be for your benefit and blessing and steer you away from decisions that can destroy you. As you look to your parents and others who have gone before you, you will find examples of faith, commitment, hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that you should strive to duplicate.

Elder Rafael E. Pino
Of the Seventy

Living the gospel . . . means that we will be prepared to face and endure adversity more confidently.
'there is no tragedy in death, but only in sin'.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Second Counselor in the First Presidency

We live in a time when many worry about their livelihood. They are concerned about the future and doubt their ability to resolve the challenges that confront them. Many have experienced personal misfortune and sadness. They hunger for meaning and purpose in life.
Because there is such great interest in these issues, the world is not bashful in offering numerous new answers to every problem we face. People run from one new idea to the next, hoping to find something that will answer the burning questions of their souls. They attend seminars and buy books, CDs, and other products. They get caught up in the excitement of looking for something new. But inevitably, the flame of each new theory fades, only to be replaced by another “new and improved” solution that promises to do what the others before could not.
It’s not that these worldly options don’t contain elements of truth—many of them do. Nevertheless, they all fall short of the lasting change we seek in our lives. After the excitement wears off, the hollowness remains as we look for the next new idea to unlock the secrets of happiness.
In contrast, the gospel of Jesus Christ has the answers to all of our problems. The gospel is not a secret. It is not complicated or hidden. It can unlock the door to true happiness. It is not someone’s theory or proposition. It does not come from man at all. It springs from the pure and everlasting waters of the Creator of the universe, who knows truths we cannot even begin to comprehend. And with that knowledge, He has given us the gospel—a divine gift, the ultimate formula for happiness and success.

President Thomas S. Monson

Be of good cheer. The future is as bright as your faith.

My dear brothers and sisters, I express my love to you. I am humbled by the responsibility to address you, and yet I am grateful for the opportunity to do so.

Since last we met together in a general conference six months ago, there have been continuing signs that circumstances in the world aren’t necessarily as we would wish. The global economy, which six months ago appeared to be sagging, seems to have taken a nosedive, and for many weeks now the financial outlook has been somewhat grim. In addition, the moral footings of society continue to slip, while those who attempt to safeguard those footings are often ridiculed and, at times, picketed and persecuted. Wars, natural disasters, and personal misfortunes continue to occur.

It would be easy to become discouraged and cynical about the future—or even fearful of what might come—if we allowed ourselves to dwell only on that which is wrong in the world and in our lives. Today, however, I’d like us to turn our thoughts and our attitudes away from the troubles around us and to focus instead on our blessings as members of the Church. The Apostle Paul declared, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

None of us makes it through this life without problems and challenges—and sometimes tragedies and misfortunes. After all, in large part we are here to learn and grow from such events in our lives. We know that there are times when we will suffer, when we will grieve, and when we will be saddened. However, we are told, “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.”

How might we have joy in our lives, despite all that we may face? Again from the scriptures: “Wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you.”

The history of the Church in this, the dispensation of the fulness of times, is replete with the experiences of those who have struggled and yet who have remained steadfast and of good cheer as they have made the gospel of Jesus Christ the center of their lives. This attitude is what will pull us through whatever comes our way. It will not remove our troubles from us but rather will enable us to face our challenges, to meet them head on, and to emerge victorious.

Too numerous to mention are the examples of all the individuals who have faced difficult circumstances and yet who have persevered and prevailed because their faith in the gospel and in the Savior has given them the strength they have needed. This morning, however, I’d like to share with you three such examples.

First, from my own family, I mention a touching experience that has always been an inspiration to me.

My maternal great-grandparents Gibson and Cecelia Sharp Condie lived in Clackmannan, Scotland. Their families were engaged in coal mining. They were at peace with the world, surrounded by relatives and friends, and were housed in fairly comfortable quarters in a land they loved. Then they listened to the message of the missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, to the depths of their very souls, were converted. They heard the call to gather to Zion and knew they must answer that call.

Sometime around 1848, they sold their possessions and prepared for the hazardous voyage across the mighty Atlantic Ocean. With five small children, they boarded a sailing vessel, all their worldly possessions in one tiny trunk. They traveled 3,000 miles (4,800 km) across the waters—eight long, weary weeks on a treacherous sea, watching and waiting, with poor food, poor water, and no help beyond the length and breadth of that small ship.

In the midst of this soul-trying situation, one of their young sons became ill. There were no doctors, no stores at which they might purchase medicine to ease his suffering. They watched, they prayed, they waited, and they wept as day by day his condition deteriorated. When his eyes were at last closed in death, their hearts were torn asunder. To add to their grief, the laws of the sea must be obeyed. Wrapped in a canvas weighed down with iron, the little body was consigned to a watery grave. As they sailed away, only those parents knew the crushing blow dealt to wounded hearts. However, with a faith born of their deep conviction of the truth and their love of the Lord, Gibson and Cecelia held on. They were comforted by the words of the Lord: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

How grateful I am for ancestors who had the faith to leave hearth and home and to journey to Zion, who made sacrifices I can scarcely imagine. I thank my Heavenly Father for the example of faith, of courage, and of determination Gibson and Cecelia Sharp Condie provide for me and for all their posterity.

I introduce next a gentle, faith-filled man who epitomized the peace and joy which the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring into one’s life.

Late one evening on a Pacific isle, a small boat slipped silently to its berth at the crude pier. Two Polynesian women helped Meli Mulipola from the boat and guided him to the well-worn pathway leading to the village road. The women marveled at the bright stars, which twinkled in the midnight sky. The moonlight guided them along their way. However, Meli Mulipola could not appreciate these delights of nature—the moon, the stars, the sky—for he was blind.

Brother Mulipola’s vision had been normal until a fateful day when, while working on a pineapple plantation, light turned suddenly to darkness and day became perpetual night. He was depressed and despondent until he learned the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. His life was brought into compliance with the teachings of the Church, and he once again felt hope and joy.

Brother Mulipola and his loved ones had made a long voyage, having learned that one who held the priesthood of God was visiting among the islands of the Pacific. He sought a blessing, and it was my privilege, along with another who held the Melchizedek Priesthood, to provide that blessing to him. As we finished, I noted that tears were streaming from his sightless eyes, coursing down his brown cheeks and tumbling finally upon his native dress. He dropped to his knees and prayed: “O God, Thou knowest I am blind. Thy servants have blessed me that my sight might return. Whether in Thy wisdom I see light or whether I see darkness all the days of my life, I will be eternally grateful for the truth of Thy gospel, which I now see and which provides the light of my life.”

He rose to his feet and, smiling, thanked us for providing the blessing. He then disappeared into the still of the night. Silently he came; silently he departed. But his presence I shall never forget. I reflected upon the message of the Master: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

My brothers and sisters, each of us has that light in his or her life. We are not left to walk alone, no matter how dark our pathway.

I love the words penned by M. Louise Haskins:

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light, that I may tread safely into the unknown!”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than [a] light and safer than a known way.”

The setting for my final example of one who persevered and ultimately prevailed, despite overwhelmingly difficult circumstances, begins in East Prussia following World War II.

In about March 1946, less than a year after the end of the war, Ezra Taft Benson, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, accompanied by Frederick W. Babbel, was assigned a special postwar tour of Europe for the express purpose of meeting with the Saints, assessing their needs, and providing assistance to them. Elder Benson and Brother Babbel later recounted, from a testimony they heard, the experience of a Church member who found herself in an area no longer controlled by the government under which she had resided.

She and her husband had lived an idyllic life in East Prussia. Then had come the second great world war within their lifetimes. Her beloved young husband was killed during the final days of the frightful battles in their homeland, leaving her alone to care for their four children.

The occupying forces determined that the Germans in East Prussia must go to Western Germany to seek a new home. The woman was German, and so it was necessary for her to go. The journey was over a thousand miles (1,600 km), and she had no way to accomplish it but on foot. She was allowed to take only such bare necessities as she could load into her small wooden-wheeled wagon. Besides her children and these meager possessions, she took with her a strong faith in God and in the gospel as revealed to the latter-day prophet Joseph Smith.

She and the children began the journey in late summer. Having neither food nor money among her few possessions, she was forced to gather a daily subsistence from the fields and forests along the way. She was constantly faced with dangers from panic-stricken refugees and plundering troops.

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks to months, the temperatures dropped below freezing. Each day, she stumbled over the frozen ground, her smallest child—a baby—in her arms. Her three other children struggled along behind her, with the oldest—seven years old—pulling the tiny wooden wagon containing their belongings. Ragged and torn burlap was wrapped around their feet, providing the only protection for them, since their shoes had long since disintegrated. Their thin, tattered jackets covered their thin, tattered clothing, providing their only protection against the cold.

Soon the snows came, and the days and nights became a nightmare. In the evenings she and the children would try to find some kind of shelter—a barn or a shed—and would huddle together for warmth, with a few thin blankets from the wagon on top of them.

She constantly struggled to force from her mind overwhelming fears that they would perish before reaching their destination.

And then one morning the unthinkable happened. As she awakened, she felt a chill in her heart. The tiny form of her three-year-old daughter was cold and still, and she realized that death had claimed the child. Though overwhelmed with grief, she knew that she must take the other children and travel on. First, however, she used the only implement she had—a tablespoon—to dig a grave in the frozen ground for her tiny, precious child.

Death, however, was to be her companion again and again on the journey. Her seven-year-old son died, either from starvation or from freezing or both. Again her only shovel was the tablespoon, and again she dug hour after hour to lay his mortal remains gently into the earth. Next, her five-year-old son died, and again she used her tablespoon as a shovel.

Her despair was all consuming. She had only her tiny baby daughter left, and the poor thing was failing. Finally, as she was reaching the end of her journey, the baby died in her arms. The spoon was gone now, so hour after hour she dug a grave in the frozen earth with her bare fingers. Her grief became unbearable. How could she possibly be kneeling in the snow at the graveside of her last child? She had lost her husband and all her children. She had given up her earthly goods, her home, and even her homeland.

In this moment of overwhelming sorrow and complete bewilderment, she felt her heart would literally break. In despair she contemplated how she might end her own life, as so many of her fellow countrymen were doing. How easy it would be to jump off a nearby bridge, she thought, or to throw herself in front of an oncoming train.

And then, as these thoughts assailed her, something within her said, “Get down on your knees and pray.” She ignored the prompting until she could resist it no longer. She knelt and prayed more fervently than she had in her entire life:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I do not know how I can go on. I have nothing left—except my faith in Thee. I feel, Father, amidst the desolation of my soul, an overwhelming gratitude for the atoning sacrifice of Thy Son, Jesus Christ. I cannot express adequately my love for Him. I know that because He suffered and died, I shall live again with my family; that because He broke the chains of death, I shall see my children again and will have the joy of raising them. Though I do not at this moment wish to live, I will do so, that we may be reunited as a family and return—together—to Thee.”

When she finally reached her destination of Karlsruhe, Germany, she was emaciated. Brother Babbel said that her face was a purple-gray, her eyes red and swollen, her joints protruding. She was literally in the advanced stages of starvation. In a Church meeting shortly thereafter, she bore a glorious testimony, stating that of all the ailing people in her saddened land, she was one of the happiest because she knew that God lived, that Jesus is the Christ, and that He died and was resurrected so that we might live again. She testified that she knew if she continued faithful and true to the end, she would be reunited with those she had lost and would be saved in the celestial kingdom of God.

From the holy scriptures we read, “Behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in [Him], they who have endured the crosses of the world, . . . they shall inherit the kingdom of God, . . . and their joy shall be full forever.”

I testify to you that our promised blessings are beyond measure. Though the storm clouds may gather, though the rains may pour down upon us, our knowledge of the gospel and our love of our Heavenly Father and of our Savior will comfort and sustain us and bring joy to our hearts as we walk uprightly and keep the commandments. There will be nothing in this world that can defeat us.

My beloved brothers and sisters, fear not. Be of good cheer. The future is as bright as your faith.

I declare that God lives and that He hears and answers our prayers. His Son, Jesus Christ, is our Savior and our Redeemer. Heaven’s blessings await us. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Di tutto e un po' *** A little of everything

Così Arielino doveva venire a mangiare a casa nostra.

I don't write in here very often, it is true, and whenever I write, it's sooo long like a novel.... perhaps even boring to read through the end ... but how can I do? The time is always short, and last Saturday we even "lost" an hour! =) Anyway I am happy because finally the sun came back out, it's not cold and the days are getting longer... I love spring!!!!!!!!!! In my head it seems still March but it's April already!
I am happy because on Saturday and on Sunday I am in Rimini to watch General Conference! I look forward to recharge myself!
Lately I had almost all Saturdays busy, except the last one. On March 14th, for example, there was, in Forlì, the Relief Society anniversary... It was interesting, we did a representation of how the Relief Society was organized, then there were several stories of sisters back then (1842) and now, I sang "Walk by faith" and then there was the famous video made by Xavier and me: very very very beautiful! And at the end we ate! Elodie was good, when we arrived she looked immediately for grandma but she came a little later, then Elodie remained with her and Rebekah .. and when she saw the food, she was very happy, I wonder why! =) On Saturday March 21st at 4 pm, there was in Forlì, the baptism of Adam Moss! Mamma mia, he's already 8 years old! Time passes really fast... Since I had forgotten that it was at 4 and because of the traffic, I arrived a little late, but in time for the celebration of the baptism. There was also a part of Rebekah's family. It was amazing as always! There was also some food, Rebekah made a really good cake! After the baptism Ariele and my mother came to my house until my father came to pick them up. Elodie love dancing, so when he came home, Xavier put on one of his music and started to dance together, soo funny!
On Sunday March 22nd, once again Xavier had to work, but only in the morning, my parents were in Ravenna for the branch conference. So Arielino came to eat at our home. At the end my mom came as well. We had to hurry, because the road in front of our house was closed because of the carnival floats had to pass for the "Segavecchia" (a kind of festival in this town). However we made it on time and in the afternoon and we saw the carnival floats just from our window, some of them were really cool! They passed at least 3 or 4 times. At night while Elodie was almost asleep, they passed another 2 or 3 times with the music and everything, they also sang "Romagna mia"! (A traditional song of this region) Elodie fell asleep despite the great noise! She must have been really tired! They did also the fireworks... was the closure of the Segavecchia festival. It started at least 2 weeks before and in downtown Forlimpopoli there was the funfair!
We went there during the week with Elodie! She went on the merry-go-round: she loved it! We ate the gouffret, Elodie and Xavier ate also the cotton candy!
I like to live in Forlimpopoli, even if it is a small place, there are so many activities, not as Dovadola!
On Monday, March 16th, inthe evening the missionaries came to help Xavier to disassemble, move here and put back together again the bedroom for Elodie, the one we found through an advertisement in the newspaper! It was not clean, so the next day I had fun cleaning and moving all the different things in the new furniture! It's really cute now that room! The mattresses are still missing, but they gave us all the rest already! We were truly blessed to find such an offer. On Wednesday, March 18th, in the night after the meeting at the church, Ariele came to our house. We watched Spiderman 1, I have never seen it before... in the following days, Xavier and I have also watched the 2nd and the 3rd and I must say that the third is the most beautiful, I liked it so much also for the morale. Anyway back to Ariele, on Thursday morning Xavier cut his hair. He then remained until the evening when my dad came to pick him up. Elodie likes her uncle and has a lot of fun with him!
An interesting thing happened about two weeks ago: early in the morning, it was about 5:45, I woke up hearing strong beat on the ceiling ... I did not understand right away what it was ... I fell asleep and then I woke up every time I felt beat, then at a certain point I could not sleep anymore and I start to think what could have happened ... Then I also heard the lady calling some names... The only thing I could think of it was that she fell and could no longer stand up, I called the owner of the house (she is the daughter of this lady) but she did not answer... After a while I tried again and she answered, I told her the situation and they came immediately! But it was already past 8. Anyway yes, the lady have fallen and could not get up. It seemed that she was ok but she still have some problems to sit down... Poor lady! If only I had called immediately! But in the morning I'm a little slow =p
On March 27th, Elodie turned 22 months old!!!!!!!!! She's almost two yearsold! As usual I tried to take the picture: after taking a lot with her eyes closed I managed to take some good pictures! But she is always so cute! =) Last Sunday, Xavier had to work all day: more than a month of work without even a day of rest! Crazy! In fact, he's sooo tired! Luckily he has this Sunday free! We hope he can soon find a better job, because certainly there are better jobs! However, last Sunday was the last one spent completely in Primary for Gloria! She's growing too, and she will be soon in Young Women! I am happy for her! And to have another young woman in the district!=)
On Tuesday at lunch time, after cleaning the apartment upstair, I went to McDonald with Elodie where I met with Marika and Chiara (I didn't know she was come as well, it was a nice surprise!). We haven't seen for such a long time! It was nice to spend a little bit of time together even if it was just for eating. They are my high school friends. We hope to be able to make a dinner with the others of our group soon!
Today I finally found the shoes for me! On Saturday morning I took my dad to ravenna where he goes twice a week, so I was able to buy a pair of shoes for Elodie I also find a pair of shoes for me to wear everyday and they were not expensive, but I need a pair of elegant shoes: the ones I bought today, now I am happy! =)
And so, these are some of the things that happened in these last few weeks ... I wonder if I will ever write more regularly in this blog...
